Lorenz and Patrick achieved their goal: After 295 days
and 36,000km on their bikes they finally arrived in Innsbruck. It was a warm welcome with all
their friends and of course there was a big party in the evening.

Moscow , another highlight to add to our City-Collection
: Aida in the Bolshoi-Theater , Father Lenin in his glass coffin , and the Kremlin. It was time to
move on after extensively looking around the Capital city of the country that we have become so
fond of during our travels. That first stage , all the way to the White Russian boarder ,
challenged us to the limit. Below freezing temperatures , snow fall , and black-ice escorted us.
From there on it all went smoothly , and now we are only a stones throw away from home. The rest
we will tell you in person in a little less than a week , for those who can't be there , as always
in the journal...... |

After tearing ourselves away from the friendly
hospitality of the Children's Village in Tashkent we began the unexpected difficult battle of
crossing the Kazakhstan steppe. The lousy roads and gusting wind and rain made headway slow-moving
and the path to Europe seemed to stretch endlessly in front of us. A few flat tires and a broken
prop-shaft didn't help our moods either. We changed our plans and headed for the better roads of
Russia. When the second prop-shaft gave up the ghost we were in need of help. Luck came our way in
the form of Victor , an Austrian , and his Truck. Our problems were solved when we loaded our
BMW's on the truck and now , would you believe it , we're sitting in Moscow. BMW Russia took over
our problems and if everything goes smoothly we are to receive sponsored prop-shafts from Germany
next week. The waiting doesn't worry us one bit , Moscow offers so much. What we will have done in
Moscow will for sure be in our next report......... |

A few words about where we are and what we are doing.
After a lot of thought and consideration as well as information from various embassies we made up
our minds to travel into Uzbekistan. All of our misgivings were washed away as we biked into
Tashkent. For the past five days we have been enjoying the friendly hospitality in the Tashkent
SOS Children's Village ,. A world wide crisis or an uncertain atmosphere is not felt here.
To prepare ourselves culturally for re-entry to Europe we went to the Opera. Verdi's " Masked
Ball" in Russian satisfied us with the pentatonic arias , the modern-interesting production ,
and the stage set , which was a knock-out , but promptly got knocked over.
It's time to move on , the lure of Samarqand and Bukhara...... |

After a seven day tour through southern Kyrgyzstan
we felt the orient for the first time when we arrived in Osh. Bazaars , Mosques ,and scents.
On our return route through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan time and again we rose up and over
3000 meter passes with continuously changing rock formations. The landscape of Kyrgyzstan
captivated us. At Song-Kul , a mountain lake , we met a group of German youth that are
travelling with two Robur busses and on their way to Mongolia. At least we were not alone that
night , in our tents , freezing , at minus 10° C. ........... |

Lorenz and Patrick are presently in Kyrgyzstan – once
again in Bishkek. Due to concern about Afghani rebels the boarder from Osh to Uzbekistan has
been closed to foreigners therefore their crossing was forbidden. The next ten days they will
spend touring Kyrgyzstan returning to Bishkek and then from Kazakhstan into Uzbekistan. They will
have to leave there by the 7th of October because their visas run out. Slowly winter is making
itself felt and of course they would prefer to be at home for that. |

The easy entry to Kazakhstan was like a breath of fresh air . We crossed the incredible expanse of the
Kazakhstan steppe for the first time. Memories of this stretch of our trip will always be the "dreamlike" spots we
found for camping , but many , too many , police-checks and they all wanted "presents-for cops". We have been
relaxing for a few days now in the Children's Village in Almati and catching our breath after all that "kilometer-eating" of the last few weeks. We are enjoying the atmosphere in the Children's Village as well as this
interesting city. |

A few thousand kilometres later , a few less litres of gas, and the ability to sit still , but without problems , we biked into Siberia's largest city , Novosibirsk. Once again , by chance , we met a French-German couple , Martina and Peter. They are travelling through Russia with their Ural-sidecar-combination and shaggy dog "Pitschu". For two days we travelled together , chatted together , and drank
together..........
Our paths separated all too soon. We are now in the very pleasant city of Barnaul and tomorrow we are headed out for Kazakhstan. The Orient , Mosques , The Silk Road..........we are on a high , and very curious about what's waiting for us down the road . |

We left Lake Baykal behind us and are now in Irkutsk. In the "Viennese Coffee House" that we found purely by
chance we have more or less become "regulars". We ignored our bikes for one day and headed out into the
Russian taiga. Our saviours in this forest were Xenia and Olga , whose idea it was to go on that outing
anyway........ |

Offroad-Mania
in Mongolia!
A BMW-bike and a russian jeep helped us to explore the terrific mongolian
landscape the last 10 days. Jolted but unharmed we returned to Ulan

20.07.2001: |

We headed out on a small discovery trip in western Mongolia. During our wanderings we felt once more the
expanse and the emptiness of Mongolia. With the exception of the Jurten , (domed tents ) , herds of horses and
sheep , one comes across very little that lives on the endless grassy hills. Blooming open countryside covered in
red lilies and fields of edelweiss show us the splendour of this country. That we would meet two other Austrians
on BMW motorcycles in the middle of Mongolia certainly was a surprise and a highlight of our tour. Of course
we had to properly celebrate this coincidence with Franz and Roman and I am certain that was not the last shared
beer...... |
